Unfortunately, standing orders from either the Home Office or West Midlands Police ensure that complained about words are listed as hate crimes “regardless of whether or not [those making the complaint] are the victim, and irrespective of whether there is any evidence to identify the hate element” and reported as such.

The optimum response from normal people should be on the lines of Rod Liddle's recommendation in his Sunday Times column: namely that " . . no matter how anodyne, fatuous, sensible or irrelevant . . [every single utterance should be] report[ed as] as a hate crime." That should gum up the works nicely.Umbongonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-23799947127411124482017-01-17T14:27:45.939+00:002017-01-17T14:27:45.939+00:00I don't know why you bother but I'm extrem...I don't know why you bother but I'm extremely glad and grateful that you do. I know it is disheartening at times and obviously a lot of work goes into maintaining this blog, but I assure you it is much appreciated.

As to the crazy professor, what disturbed me most was that the police apparently took his complaint seriously. Perhaps Andrew Neil would have been better advised to approach it from that angle. But then it wouldn’t have been such “good television” (if that’s what it was).
