I think Easton sees English identity as retrograde, associated with an explicitly Christian flag, male aggression, football, the EDL...he sees it as potentially a powerful force opposed to his "progressivism" (as he would like to think of it). That's why he is keen on diluting it with regionalism, diversity and other forms of identification. Of course, most English people don't see it that way. It is not an explicitly political identity - it's more a cultural identity.
