I don’t always agree with him, but I appreciate his enthusiasm for his subject. <br />Whatever the current academic theory the similarities between Gothic and Islamic architecture, particularly some of the shapes and the repeated patterns, are plain to see. It’s entirely plausible that there was some sort of influence if only indirectly. However, if you excuse the dreadful pun, AGD was laying it on with a trowel. I found the notion of conflating concerns about immigration in present day France with an Islamic culture a millennium ago clumsy to say the least. Apart from the insertion of the PC message, which the BBC now seems to think an essential ingredient, it was an otherwise interesting programme.Terryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05818860172734529356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-52175600964368190472017-02-04T18:24:17.910+00:002017-02-04T18:24:17.910+00:00The accepted antecedent to northern European Gothi...The accepted antecedent to northern European Gothic architecture is Etruscan, "borrow(ed) from Islamic architecture" No. Once again the truth is an inconvenience to the BBC narrative, which means that, in their eyes, history might need to be rewritten now and then.
