The comment in question seems reasonable, though.

BBC journalists quote un-named sources a lot. And they used to think that was enough because they had that famed editorial integrity to associate with it. Sadly this is no longer a justification, any more than the BBC's back-up at complaints or FOI disappearing behind belief sets or exemptions that often render BBC 'reporting' merely as the claims of a person passing on the claims of another person. Which these days is not worth much, at all. I have a complaint stuck in limbo on this very issue right now, working up though ECU to Trust, hinging on them saying what one reporter says he heard from one unspecified source justified clearing schedules for one very damaging, partisan, political story, was fine in their starry-eyes.

Most are well aware 'that's how it works', and given how it has worked, the trust in trust, and transparency, by the public gets assigned accordingly.

Also, for the BBC, 'but others do it' is wearing thin too.

Other broadcasters, and press, do not require funding through compulsion, and can lose revenue via lost ad eyeballs or cancelled subscription through failed service delivery.

They can, also, be subject to admittedly pretty dire industry, actually independent censure if any erring is egregious. Or the new Hacked Off/Leveson punt concocted in Ed's second lobby, which does not apply to broadcast and certainly not the BBC.

The BBC, of course, oversees the BBC internally and in secret.

All the while trumpeting via a pretty vast foghorn how trusted and transparent they think they are, and all should agree because they say so. Saying it often enough is proven effective, if with a bad back history.

And the history of the BBC having doubts about the BBC's reliability in this regard, on the few occasions sunlight shines on them, is not encouraging.Emmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11550976834509947355noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-40675242137513858272015-04-06T19:57:53.056+01:002015-04-06T19:57:53.056+01:00Oh, the irony of 'Anonymous' leaving this ...Oh, the irony of 'Anonymous' leaving this comment. Check out the newspapers some time, you may find the odd 'anonymous' source lurking, er, everywhere. If there weren't any anonymously-sourced stories, most of the news would consist of recycled press releases. In politics, well over 50% of news stories come from off-the-record briefings. That's how the world of Westminster works, and has for generations.Peternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-67171200182034508042015-04-06T12:00:17.236+01:002015-04-06T12:00:17.236+01:00 BBC journalists quite often report things from ... BBC journalists quite often report things from unnamed sources. . Unless the viewer or listener is given the source they cannot judge whether that source is reliable or not and this practise should be questioned at all times and not just at an election .It also gives the journalists the opportunity of putting their own point of view forward by pretending it comes from an outside source and this dishonest practise should be exposed. .
