I was buying some wine in my local Hove off-license. Enter stage left a local cleric. She was a grey-haired, in her late 50s, rotund overtly lesbian, attired in sawn-off blue denim shorts, a white cheese-cloth semi transparent shirt and a clip-on dog collar. At first, I thought she might be wearing fancy-dress, but no. This was her intended presence. Her purchase? Some roll-up tobacco and a box of matches.
My last visit to church was during a visit to a friend in a remote rural parish in Dorset. The vicar there could have been her sister, and in her sermon she spoke of the wonders of multiculti quality. There were six celebrants, all over 65. I spoke to them afterwards. What did they make of their spiritual shepherd? Not a lot. It's a good 2000 years since anyone seriously believed in the Greek pantheon but nonetheless sensible people still detect there a rich cultural tradition that needs preserving.

We should have more straightforward teaching of the Bible stories in schools and the outline of Christian faith, without demanding faith, so people can make sense of these marvellous edifices within our midst with those lovely ringing bells.
