Mishal Husain: Pushing another angle

Talking of Mishal Husain and her habit of pushing one particular angle...

As we discussed yesterday (and following on from the previous post), Mishal seemed to be pushing one particular angle on yesterday's programme as well.

Reporting from Lebanon on the plight of refugees from Syria, that angle could be summed up as: Shouldn't Britain be taking in more of these poor refugees?

That seems to be a familiar default position for BBC interviewers/reporters. Rather than wondering whether we should be doing more to support the refugees on the ground or taking firmer action against their oppressors, it seems to come naturally to them instead to leap straightaway to the presumption that the 'something' which 'must be done' is to bring them all here - regardless of any consideration of how they would fit into the UK and whether they might bear us ill will (despite our generosity) - as others in their position have done before (despite our generosity).

Having discussed that here yesterday, I came across this Twitter exchange today which, I think, reinforces the points made above. Mishal Husain does seem to have been on a mission yesterday and that didn't go unnoticed by an influential campaigner:

  1. Leaving the camp with no idea if telling the refugees' stories will make any difference to what the world is willing to do for
  2. Thank you for your brilliant reporting and for asking question - is UK doing enough? 50 resettled refugees and counting...
  3. most of those are dependents by the way, so it's a handful of families
  4. I lead campaign on this. You brilliantly highlighted UK's arm's length approach. Will make a difference.

  5. Know how life changing a resettlement place is. We help resettled refugees after arrival here. Get in touch for more info
  6. anna.musgrave@refugeecouncil.org.uk - would be great to hear from you.

  1. Good find, exposing that she goes to her programmes with an agenda - a v. familiar one.

I find it difficult to make out Mishal...

Her family is from the Indian sub-continent. She obviously knows what the Sharia system entails. In many ways she appears to have completed rejected her religious heritage.

But then she seems to have very little understanding of the dangers to this country of mass immigration.

Can she really be so naive as to think it's a good idea to cosy up to Hezbollah or that any sort of lasting peace would come of it if you did?

She seems to retain that unthinking dismissal of Israel's rights, treating Hezbollah's refusal to negotiate with Israel as perfectly legitimate.

Did she tackle Hezbollah about their treatment of Christians, women and gays? I very much doubt it.

  2. Her views are one-sided and for that reason she cannot be allowed to continue broadcasting what is supposed to be unbiased comment.
