I watched the ...Finally getting around to this now. I watched the video to get the full effect. I won't bother trying to interpret Katz's pretty obvious body language, because that would be inferring something that isn't there, etc.

So, lets count the canards Katz put forward as a defense.

1. By using the term 'unpatriotic', Leadsom meant journalists must support the Government line, like in Moscow or Beijing, rather than being supportive of a good outcome for the country in general.

2. Other complaints can be dismissed because they're about a short clip or clips taken out of context from the full interview, even though Ahmed specifically made the distinction between social media clips and the full interview.

3. Britain is physcially part of the European Continent.

4. Other interviewees filibuster and dodge, so it's okay for Maitlis to cut off and constantly interrput Leadsom.

5. Maitlis saying "You were in power" wasn't personal, and is just the same as saying "One could have done something." Despite the actual words Maitlis said, she wasn't speaking personally to the woman who was the Home Secretary at the time when the issue was presented to her, personally. (Maitlis's question as phrased was fair enough, I think, so Katz is just reflexively dodging here.)

6. A presenter getting angry and shouting is perfectly fine because they are merely 'channeling' the thoughts and emotions of viewers who want those questions answered.

Well, I don't call her 'Stage Performer Maitlis' for nothing, then.

Did I miss any?David Preiser (USA)https://www.blogger.com/profile/00055001852090086556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-58783453471985652922017-07-03T19:12:53.355+01:002017-07-03T19:12:53.355+01:00Agreed. To have spent c £10 million on refurbishment of the block does not sound like austerity to me.

When the Public Inquiry presents its findings, we will know the reasons that the fire was able to spread from inside a fourth floor flat outside to the cladding. Whether it was poor design, or inadequate regulation that was the cause remains to be seen - but austerity in itself was not the cause of this tragedy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-83215738438157883562017-07-01T19:29:24.477+01:002017-07-01T19:29:24.477+01:00Did they show the image of Mrs May's head on a...Did they show the image of Mrs May's head on a spike that's being reported elsewhere?Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08741318067991857821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-88632994000662302322017-07-01T19:28:25.980+01:002017-07-01T19:28:25.980+01:00It reminded me of a scrape former Conservative MP ...It reminded me of a scrape former Conservative MP David Willetts got into many years back over the meaning of the word 'wants', as in "He wants our advice".

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/1996/nov/17/conservatives.ukCraighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08741318067991857821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-17059651962636735802017-07-01T18:49:41.131+01:002017-07-01T18:49:41.131+01:00Oops! We were shown Corbyn in full-on demagogue mode but not shown the marchers - if they couldn't give the impression that there were thousands of them by using the usual tricks: low camera angle etc, there were probably very few. Certainly that was the impression given by the thin & scattered applause.Sisyphushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02650372666915304667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-7668718841921306882017-07-01T18:21:28.401+01:002017-07-01T18:21:28.401+01:00I thought Samira Ahmed did a good job. Katz's claim that when Maitlis said 'you' to Theresa May she really meant 'one' was lame &, to anyone who has watched that interview, pretty pathetic. Where are the equivalent 'accountability interviews' with Corbyn or Mcdonnell - asking about their extreme left-wing views and policies for the future should they ever gain power, and importantly, about their ties with the Unite Union?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272054900018746845.post-8135660179223181982017-07-01T10:47:27.019+01:002017-07-01T10:47:27.019+01:00My intepretation based on nothing at all...I recko...My intepretation based on nothing at all...I reckon this was a set up. This was an interview Katz probably wanted and maybe had a chat about to the Newswatch producer, the idea being to give Andrea Leadsom a good kicking for having the temerity to impugn the evident pattiotism of all Newsnight presenters.

But maybe there's a bit of an animus thing going on here. Maybe Ahmed doesn't like Katz for some reason (or maybe it's Emily for her long slender legs)...maybe there's history...maybe she put in for the Newsnight producer job! Who knows? But I don't think this went according to plan. Ellie Fant-Indaroomnoreply@blogger.com
