The was a lovely, funny and, at times, rather moving documentary on BBC Two last night called The School That Got Teens Reading:

It's well worth watching. (And I'm not just saying that because it's my old school).

  1. A South African primary school (at least before the Education Department cleansed itself of 'whiteness') had a headmaster who encouraged reading by offering to do something silly at end of year if the pupils met reading targets. It almost always worked, and the kids had a great laugh at (say) the head getting doused in whitewash, or walking the playground on stilts.

  2. So, what book did the nice ethnically diverse luvvie choose for the teenagers to read? I can't remember the name or author, but it concerned what life is like for a pair of co-joined twins. Fiction of course. Just the sort of thing to appeal to teenagers. Not.
I wonder what would have happened if the cameras had not been there.
