I was glad to see Jacob Rees-Mogg’s style guide because it put me right on something I’ve struggled with. I’m probably not going to use Esq. all that much - (Envelopes?) (Handwriting?) (Postman Pat?) in fact I’ve almost forgotten how to hold my pen - but I was particularly glad to hear that organisations are singular.
That means I must call the BBC “it” and not “they” or ‘them”. If I remember.
I think this Esq. thing is a bit of a solecismn Wikipedia says in "the United Kingdom, Esquire historically was a title of respect accorded to men of higher social rank, particularly members of the landed gentry above the rank of gentleman and below the rank of knight". I thought it was only used for Reader's Digest campaigns.
ReplyDeleteI agree with JRM on double space after full stops...certainly for official documents it improves comprehension.
Imperial "measurements"? Does he mean imperial units/the imperial system. Is he expecting Civil Servants to convert the 75 cl for a bottle of wine into pints? How absurd!!
Perhaps it was good he wasn't appointed Chancellor after all...
