While you're waiting for Michael McIntyre...

Courtesy of The Dad Joke Man:
2020 - The year my bins went out more than me...
On January 1st I’m going to change my laptop screen to 1600 x 1200. That's my New Year's resolution.
I saw Sinead O’Connor in a birdwatching hide yesterday. I asked her what kind of activity she’d seen. She replied “It’s been seven owls and fifteen jays....”
One of my New Year resolutions for 2021 is to get inside a tyre and roll down a hill every day. It’s going to be a Goodyear.
I think it’s a disgrace that so many people still don’t know who Neil Armstrong is or what kind of trumpet he played.
I haven’t kept up my subscription to Scrabble Club. Now they’ve started sending me threatening letters.
Still had no message from Bono. It seems all is quiet on New Year's Day.

Light relief

Alex Dale on Twitter:

On the 31 January at 11pm -

- Big Ben will bong
- a Lancaster bomber will bombard Parliament Square with blue passports
- erasmus students will be tarred and feathered
- all merlot will be poured into the Thames
- all Pret a Mangers will become Gregg's
- The only legal tender will be Brexit 50 pence pieces
- chalet girls will be humanely put to work removing the word Brussels from sprout packaging
- the channel tunnel will be ceremonially locked shut by Mark Francois
- Trans-European couples will fall out of love

Singsong

Sunday, 22 December 2019

Alas, poor Biggins!

Dame: My husband fell into a huge vat of granulated coffee and was never seen again. It was a terrible way to go but at least it was instant.

Mark Mardell told Paddy this morning about a festive feature coming up on today's The World This Weekend:
'He's behind you! Oh no she isn't!'. In these gender-fluid days why pantomime is doing less cross-dressing.
Oh Gawd! Isn't it tempting to follow Snow White is into a ‘sleeping death’ till this nonsense passes?

What do you mean you've never heard of ‘sleeping death’? You’ve obviously never listened to Radio 4's Sunday programme.

Diversions

A few jokes for all the family (not even one featuring a parrot, alas):

I always give up my seat on a bus, which is why I lost my job as the driver.

I started edging my seat imperceptibly closer and closer to hers. It took many years, because she lived several miles away.

"Excuse me… hello - do you mind me asking, I thought I recognised your voice: are you… Béyonce?” “It’s ‘Beyoncé' actually, but yes” “Ah, sorry, I couldn't quite place your accent"

You should only be allowed to read Catch 22 if you've read it before.

I threw a ball for my dog. Extravagant, I know, but it was his 21st birthday.

Another Letter from Boris

(Via Bruce Lawson):

Letter from Boris. Dear Jean-Claude,
The house apparently needs an extension. So I’m hoping you can recommend a good firm of builders. Cheers. Boris.

Plenty Of Offence

As every right-minded person (of whatever gender, or none, or every) knows, jokes aren't a laughing matter these days.

And rightly so.

If you make or laugh at an inappropriate joke you shouldn't just be ashamed of yourself, you should actually be shamed.

Publicly.

Painfully.

Preferably with milkshake.

Or just get clobbered within an inch of your racist life with one of Owen Jones's highly-reasoned, heavyweight tomes.

And you should then be banned from social media.

And lose your job.

And, hopefully, die - especially if you're also old and voted for Brexit.

*******

I saw a list of the top 10 jokes at this year's Edinburgh Festival today and found all but one of them highly offensive.

To laugh at any of the nine so-called 'funny ones' is akin to abetting genocide.

It's time to either ban the Edinburgh Fringe once and for all, or (better) to no-platform anyone whose is considered 'funny', as 'being funny' is a gendered, racist synonym for 'being bigoted'.

Let true comedians, like BBC comedian Milton Jones (who gave us the only truly successful joke in the Top Ten), take the truly edgy route of true comedy and attack those who truly deserve to be milkshaked or clobbered by jokes - namely, Brexit supporters, the Duke of Edinburgh and the old.

"What's driving Brexit? From here it looks like it's probably the Duke of Edinburgh", quipped the mighty Milton - surely the equal of John Milton (another noted wit).

That's the kind of biting, bang-on-the-mark joke right-thinking BBC Radio 4 audiences laugh their well-chosen, vegan-sympathetic socks off about every day on BBC Radio 4, uproariously. So, therefore, it must be funny.

*******

But, alas, not everyone's like Milton:

For instance, to make a joke out of mental illness is appalling.

We can all agree about that.

All my multiple personalities are unanimous about that too.

And France's greatest heroes - Napoleon and President Macron and St. Dominic of Grieve (who are also me, as you probably know) - also agree about that.

The 'second-best' joke this year - "Someone stole my antidepressants. Whoever they are, I hope they're happy" - is, therefore, one of the most offensive things EVER.

I've spent the entire day sobbing with rage over it and re-reading my teenage Sylvia Plath tribute poem over and over and over again. "Aunty, Aunty, you bi*ch, I'm through", etc.

The white, middle-aged, male so-called 'comedian' behind it should be hounded off every stage in the country and then arrested and put in solitary confinement in the same cell with like-minded bigots like Tommy Yaxley Casciani of the EDL.

*******

The 'fourth-best' joke - "A cowboy asked me if I could help him round up 18 cows. I said, 'Yes, of course. That's 20 cows'" by Jake Lambert - fails to give testimony to the suffering of native Americans at the hand of cowboys - white racists like him.

This so-called 'comedian' (white, middle-aged, male) is, and let's speak truth to power here and tell it straight, nothing but a racist.

He - as a racist - needs to educate himself by watching the Disney documentary 'Pocahontas' which detailed the oppression of native Americans (like the story's lead character, voiced by leading American actress and follower of the Stanislavski system Dame Elizabeth Warren) at the hand of white, racist, middle-aged, male cowboys like this racist racist Jake Lambert.

*******

But it was the 'winning joke' that REALLY made my blood boil.

I literally couldn't be more offended. David Lammy should find out the white, racist bigot of a so-called 'comedian' who told this and punch his *%^&*$£ing fascist lights out, gently and kindly.

Arse.

This *%^&*$£ing fascist mocked sufferers of Tourtette's Syndrome. I stand shoulder-to-arse with all Tourette's sufferers in finding this arse truly beyond the *%^&*$£ing pale: "I keep randomly shouting out 'broccoli' and 'cauliflower' - I think I might have florets."

I was going to *%^&*$£ing complain but, according to the *%^&*$£ing BBC arse, someone got there first:

Deep respect there for the BBC for doing their woke duty and leaping to make that a serious headline news story.

Joke

I hope I've got Andrew Neil's implicit blessing to 'borrow' this splendid Spectator cartoon:

We're on the Road to Nowhere

...where a strong anti-Brexit angle would open the programme then, after the news, a string of anti-Brexit experts would appear making a damning case against Brexit and, finally, a pro-Brexit interviewee would appear to answer all the charges (often with Mark interrupting).
...is still in regular use.

Today's edition was nothing new under the sun in this respect, except that Matthew Price was in the chair instead of Mark Mardell.

The strong anti-Brexit angle which opened the programme was that the UK's road haulage industry would be very badly hit by a no deal Brexit. The string of anti-Brexit experts (with Matthew explicitly describing his first guest as "an expert") did indeed make a damning case against Brexit, and the final pro-Brexit interviewee - here Andrew Bridgen MP - duly appeared to answer all the charges and got interrupted.

From the end of the news bulletin, the build-up to the interview with Mr Bridgen lasted nine minutes, the interview with Mr Bridgen four minutes. (I've heard worse, balance-wise). But the interruptions had me laughing, as Matthew first interrupted the Tory backbencher three seconds into his first answer, interrupted him again four seconds into his second answer and interrupted him five seconds into his third answer.

Maybe he deserved it. The BBC's transport correspondent, listening, says the MP got his facts wrong:

The pro-EU #FBPE community was again pleasantly surprised:

  • Great (for once) item on R4 World this Weekend, interview with Kevin Hopper, haulier re Brexit. Tory MP  in response had no clue. #PeoplesVote
  • I thought @BBCMatthewPrice did a fine job here. But sad that it stands out as unusual re-the beeb and Brexit interrogation.
  • Good #wato
  • Remarkable performance wasn’t it? The presenter tried (much better from the BBC) but was so exasperated he could barely conceal his despair.

They are having a good day, Radio 4-wise.

P.S. I'm sure the BBC's Tom Burridge wouldn't demur from the following explainer, which I've just seen on Twitter:
Why can’t people understand motorways?!
Left lane - lorries/anxious people
Middle lane - middle lane hoggers
Right lane - people going at 90+
It’s not difficult.

ENGPAN

Well, I couldn't resist (sorry)....

Panama playing so badly England must think all their Isthmuses have come at once.

(And within a minute of me posting that Panama scored!)

Jokes on Sunday

(Mostly garnered from this amusing corny Twitter feed. One I heard a few times on my holiday in Spain. Can you guess which one?)

  • Took the shell off my racing snail. Thought it might speed him up. If anything, it made him more sluggish.
  • My wife accused me of being a transvestite. So I packed her things and left.
  • Have YOU had to walk 500 miles? Were you advised to walk 500 more? You could be entitled to compensation. Call the Pro Claimers now!
  • A Muslim strip club in Benidorm. The Muslim stripper comes out. The crowd gets rowdy. Suddenly someone cries out, 'Come on love, show us your face!'. And then the chant goes up, 'Get your nose out for the lads!'
  • I went to the doctors with hearing problems. He said, "Can you describe the symptoms?" I said, "Homer's a fat bloke and Marge has blue hair".
  • My wife told me women are better at multitasking than men. So I told her to sit down and shut up. Guess what? She couldn't do either!

And the biggest joke of all...

  • If you don't have a TV licence, you could get sent to prison...where you can watch TV all day, without needing a licence.

He's back!

A little light relief:

  • Tony Blair warns article 50 could be launched within 45 minutes.
  • If only Tony Blair could lay his hands on some kind of dossier to warn us all on the imminence of the threat from Brexit.

Tuesday, 27 December 2016

I sent my girlfriend a huge pile of snow and then I rang her up and said, "Did you get my drift?"

Here are a few Tim Vine jokes from yesterday's The Tim Vine Christmas Chat Show (all worthy of being inside Christmas crackers):

  • I actually live in an Advent calendar. It's freezing at the moment because all the windows are open.
  • Shopping can be quite a tense thing. I've got a fear of enclosed grottoes. I've got Santa Claustrophobia.
  • I was in Tesco. I saw this man and woman wrapped in a barcode. I said, "Are you two an item?"
  • Did you know this? The guitarist in U2, who's called The Edge, he actually takes December off. He's replaced by a Christmas guitarist called The Sledge.
  • I said to this bloke, "I can do an impression of the Beatrix Potter character called Puddleduck". He said, "Jemima?" I said, "No, I do the voice as well".
  • He said, "If you were a comedian"...(I let that go)..."would you want to be like Morecambe or Wise?" I said, "Like Morecambe". He said, "Likewise". I said, "No, like Morecambe".

What's going on though? This was a Radio 4 6.30 comedy and there were no jokes about Trump, Boris, the Daily Mail or Brexit. Someone at Radio 4 slipped up there.

Joke

Another joke (though not one you're likely to hear on The News Quiz)...

The Labour leadership paradox

Zeno's Paradox: Illustrating the Labour leadership contest, and why Owen Smith (left) could never beat Jeremy Corbyn (right)

In between all this ever-so-fair-minded slagging-off of the BBC, I'd just like to put in a word for the return of one of my favourite Radio 4 programmes, In Our Time.

This week, Marcus de Sautoy & Co. gave Melvyn a fine lecture on Zeno's Paradoxes.

This didn't tell the following Zeno-based joke though, which - for your pleasure - I'll give in two distinct versions (the first Barry Cryer's, as told to Paddy on BH; the second Jo Brand's, as told to Matt and Alex on The One Show):
Version 1: A mathematician, a physicist and an engineer were asked to answer this question: A group of boys are at one end of a dance hall, and the same number of girls are lined up at the other end of the dance hall. Both groups then have to walk toward each other by one quarter the distance separating them every 10 seconds. In other words,  they are d apart at t = 0, they're d/2 at t = 10, d/4 at t = 20, d/8 at t = 30, and so on. When would the two groups meet in the middle of the dance hall? The mathematician said they would never really meet since the series is infinite. The physicist said they would meet when time equals infinity. The engineer said that within one minute they would be close enough for all practical purposes.
Version 2: An engineer, a mathematician, and a theoretical physicist went to a dance. Shyly they positioned themselves against a wall where they had a good view of the dance.
The mathematician sighed heavily and said “I wish I could go ask one of those people sitting at that table over there to dance with me, but it is impossible.”
“Why is that?” asked the theoretical physicist.
“If I go halfway over to the table, I will still have halfway to go” replied the Mathematician.
  “Yes” Said the engineer.
“Then if I cover half the remaining distance I will still have a quarter of the way to go” Said the mathematician.
  “Yes” Replied the engineer.
The mathematician continued “I can then cover half the remaining distance, but a 16th of the distance remains.”
The theoretical physicist chimed in “Everytime you cover half the distance to the table a small but calculatable amount of distance remains.”
“Right!” said the mathematician “So it impossible for me to go over there and ask for a dance”
The physicist was about to commiserate with a “too bad for us” when the Engineer got up and walked over to the table.
The physicist and the mathematician watched in amazement as the engineer asked a particularly attractive young lady to dance, proceeded to dance with her, gave her a lingering kiss, and then came back to their place on the wall.
“How did you do that?” asked the physicist in awe.
“Although you were correct I calculated that I would be able to get close enough for any purpose I could think of”.
