So now we know. The new Doctor Who is a woman. Peter Capaldi will regenerate into Jodie Whittaker, the star of Broadchurch.
Coincidentally, the new (roadrunner) showrunner of Doctor Who Chris Chibnall was Broadchurch's creator, which is nice.
The BBC website says that Chris knew that "the 13th Doctor was always going to be a woman".
Didn't we all?
For those who might think that this post lowers the tone somewhat, here's Samira Ahmed to raise it again with her 'Collected Twitter Thoughts' on the matter (hot off the presses):
Who says such things aren't deadly serious!7
What's that I'm hearing from a generic left-wing Radio 4 comedian tonight?: Donald Trump is tweeting that it's a bad decision from the BBC, using the hashtag, #MGGA - "Make Gallifrey Great Again". FAKE NEWS!

- There that wasn't so hard was it? #doctor13. But don't forget one of the best & most popular assistants ever [Pearl Mackie] was dropped under its cover.
- Think how truly groundbreaking if u just added a new female doctor. Why does it feel like a one woman in one woman out rule? #Doctor13
- Obviously don't know about rest of new cast yet but there is a real underlying issue, which is how the gatekeeping on tv diversity operates.
- Lone exceptional woman surrounded by men populates so much tv. Has for decades. Not a breakthrough.

Hideously white, though.

Danny Cohen too.
Greg Dyke, not so much.
Funny how things have 'evolved' for a new age when one is dealing with an entity who spans all time and space.
Personally I was hoping for Eccentrica Gallumbits, the triple-breasted whore of Eroticon.
Guess that is for a future morph.
Some people say her erogenous zones start some four miles from her actual body. Me, I disagree, I say five. (Eccentrica that is, not Jodie.)
DeleteWhen does the gender numbers game no longer matter? When everyone on air and in management are women, permanently? It's a dangerous game.
ReplyDeleteClearly not when there an equal number of female sewage workers, scaffolders, bricklayers and lorry drivers. Inequality in such areas is of no interest to Samira and co. for some reason.
DeleteI don't know if anyone else though the BBC's advert for the new doctor who looked a bit cack-handed in it's positioning after the men's final in the tennis. Who'd have thought the key to the tardis was a cheap timpson copy of a yale key.
ReplyDeleteAnd there was I, thinking it'd have to be a one-legged, black (preferably muslim),genetically-engineered, hermaphrodite! Sisyphus
ReplyDeleteHad we been in uk, I'd have trotted along to Wm Hill & bet my shirt on its being a black (preferably Muslim), one-legged, surgically modified hermaphrodite. In a couple of years' time, perhaps...Sisyphus
ReplyDeleteThe ratio of female teachers to male teachers at my kids primary school it's worse than 10 women to 1 man and yet this doesn't seem to get the same coverage or national concern?! It's actually much more worrying than what they watch on TV being sexist.
