On last night's The World Tonight (beginning at 22:51) presenter Ritula Shah said the following:
Well, as the number of people making their way across Europe to claim asylum has risen there's been more scrutiny of who's risking that journey. Eurostat, the European statistics agency, has figures from the second quarter of this year which show that while most asylum seekers are predictably from Syria, more surprisingly Afghans are in second place. But why?
Given that, as has been widely reported, Eurostat showed that only 20.6% of those asylum seekers came from Syria, how on earth can Ritula Shah assert that "most asylum seekers are predictably from Syria"?
After all, the figures show that 79.4% of them didn't come from Syria.
What's going on here?
