Dark Times

Here's presenter Kirsty Lang on this Tuesday's Front Row
Because we live in dark times, don't we, as you say, global warming, war in the Middle East, Brexit, Trump, I mean, Arifa, does writing comedy feel frivolous do you think?
"Brexit" and "Trump" may feel like 'dark times' to those who feel negatively about them but, of course, many other people feel positively about them, and surely a BBC presenter shouldn't be describing either as 'dark times'?

  1. Dark times? Compared with the 1930s? With two world wars? With the Winter of Discontent? Even with 9-11? I suppose if you can have anti-depressants, Kirsty must on the reverse medication: pro-depressants. And I think we can be sure Arifa didn't answer: "You know what, Kirsty, buck up, worse things happen at see, put on a happy face and whistle me a tune."

  2. Or someone could have said:

Because we live in dark times, don't we, as you say, political correctness, Corbyn, snowflakes, no immigration controls, closing down free speech, anti-semitism, biased news. I mean, Arifa, does writing left wing comedy feel frivolous do you think?
