Fail

Tina D

A recent comment at Biased BBC ran as follows:

Roland Deschain
Did I just hear this right on the BBC news?
“Gisela Stuart has failed to apologise for Vote Leave overspending…”
Not even “declined”. “Failed.” The BBC clearly feels it’s her duty to do so.
In other news, the BBC has failed to apologise for its years of anti-Brexit bias.

RD did indeed hear it right. Tina Daheley, presenting the BBC One late evening news bulletin last night, read out the following BBC script:
The former Labour MP Gisela Stuart, a key figure in the Vote Leave campaign, has failed to apologise for the group breaking electoral spending rules. The organisation dropped its appeal against a fine after it was found to have exceeded spending limits during the referendum.

  1. Yes they gave that a prominent position on the website...when I saw it I thought: "Brazen bias!". And yes, the way it was worded in non-standard English was bizarre (as I think RD noted). This is almost the definition of non-news. What are we going to have tomorrow? "Shami Chakrabati does not apologise for her failure to identify culture of anti-semitism in Labour Party, now confirmed by mountain of evidence."? Er, no of course not. The Apology Demand is used as a political weapon (must remember to add it to check if it was in the Festive Fifty because it is an oft-used bias technique.

  2. More and more examples of Brazen Bias around. Take this from Anthony Zurcher's twitter account.

It makes quite clear where his political sympathies lie. He hates conservative politics.

You can't read these tweets and then take seriously his claims to be an unbiased journalistic working for a "free, fair and impartial" service.

    1. No, you can't. He's certainly on his soapbox there:

"Wealthy residents showing up at a public town hall forum held at a members-only tennis club to complain that their share of government services is not proportionate to the amount of taxes they pay is how slogans like “eat the rich” get traction.

"I sometimes ask my more hard-core conservative friends who want to aggressively cut and privatize government services and the social safety net what they think eventually happens when you have a permanent and hopeless underclass with more people and nothing left to lose."

    2. He seems to be having some sort of meltdown, possibly occasioned by "The Great Exoneration of Trump".

Now he's making clear his support for Far Left Marxist Bernie Sanders.

  3. "I sometimes ask my more hard-core 'remain' friends who want to aggressively shout down the 'leave' voters what they think eventually happens when you have a permanent and hopeless underclass with more people and nothing left to lose."

    1. Hi StewGreen,

The purpose of hijacking your comments was to point out what has become a routine on the BBC News website - of publishing one version (in this case without the comparative Leave/remain spending) and later, after the story has been read and is losing its impact, the to archive the story in a significantly different form (in this case with the comparison). This site has been highlighting the ploy in recent months.
