"It seemed very white"

Again BBC (#wato this afternoon & @BBCr4today this morning) hectoring and lecturing about lack of diversity in film awards. Wtf does it mean? Stop this Orwellian change of our lives and stick to reporting facts instead of imposing your groupthink PC view of the world.
So I thought I'd echo his howl.

Here, then, is Jon Sopel questioning BAFTA's Amanda Berry on Today this morning:
Jon Sopel: There's been a lot of criticism over the past few years, which I know BAFTA has been trying to address, about the, sort of, diversity of award nominees and winners. Would you say that this is a more diverse list?
Amanda Berry: Erm...actually, if I'm being totally honest, no...
Jon Sopel: (interrupting) I mean, I was just looking through it...
Amanda Berry: I was disappointed...
Jon Sopel: Yeah, I was just looking through the names of, kind of, all the different, you know, categories and it doesn't seem very...It seemed very white.
Amanda Berry: Yes, I'm not going to disagree with you, Jon. I'm goint to totally agree with you.
And on The World At OneSarah Montague pursued the same angle with two guests - one of whom shared the same concerns, and the other of whom also shared the same concerns, saying "I have to echo that".

So, in the end, it looks as if everyone on BBC Radio 4 today agrees with Jon Sopel...which is nice for him.

Echo, echo, echo...

  1. Strangely the Filmfare 2019 (Bollywood) Awards look very, how would Jon Snow say,... brown?

    1. I don't think the Chinese are going to be too happy about that either!

  2. Yes, I commented on this on the Open Thread:

"A New Year, a new decade...and the BBC is back in the groove, racialising everything and race-baiting the Great British Public. They never learn do they?

This time on WATO - it's the BAFTAs - not enough people of colour getting awards apparently. It's as if the BBC won't be satisified until every awards ceremony has to dole out its pathetic bling items on a race-by-race basis.

It would be comical were it not so very, very dangerous. Once you go down this racialising road, there is no stopping, because you are never going to achieve perfect "equality of outcome". All you are doing is creating a resentment culture...and that nearly always ends up in tears - big tears.

Also, it's extremely hypocritical of the BBC. Take Newsnight...they have just appointed yet another white male - Lewis Goddard - to take up an important reporting role on the programme, to go along with the all-white presentation team. I can't actually think of a single Black or Asian (in the BBC sense) member of the Newsnight team, unless you are going to count "Swaying" Ben Chu."

  3. Has Jon perchance looked at the BBC N. America line up?

One white one, one blonde one, one bald white one and Nick Bryant.

And he drives a Fiat 500 that he leaves at the airport on weekly visits to do a TDS on GMT. Apparently. Sources say.

    1. In fairness, Nick Bryant represents the permatanned community.

  4. "Echo, echo, echo..."

Cool it with the anti-semiotics, Craig!

Would Mr Sopel be so keen to explore the - ahem - lack of diversity behind the camera, though? I suspect not as it might lead to a little too much noticing. Just as one might notice things about the over-representation elsewhere in the BBC...

    "the all-white presentation team"

Are you sure? Maitlis, Barnett are only 'white' when crypsis demands it, but they're not the implied 'white' that their fellow tribesman, Sopel, draws attention to.
