Breaking news tonight:
The report begins:
Four asylum seekers were rescued by a fishing boat when their dinghy got into trouble off the Kent coast.
And ends:
He added: "They didn't speak any English but they kept saying 'Iran' because I was asking where they had come from and if they were OK."Comments could be going better:
If we had a sensible government - I won't say tough because there's nothing tough about it really - we would follow Australia's lead and process applicants for asylum at a distant location e.g. St Helena and have a thorough vetting process, allowing the applicant ample time to prove their claim. I think then, that like Australia found, we would find the number of asylum seekers went from tens or hundreds of thousands to close to zero.
ReplyDeleteBut of course any genuine asylum seeker would still prefer to be shipped off to St Helena for a few years if necessary to escape real threats to life or persecution. This would simply deter the chancers.
Any failed applicants would have the option of returning to their country of origin or staying on St. Helena or wherever in perpetuity.
