I'd argue that, though lives were quite 'creative' for the era in being 'interesting' in the Chinese sense, too many of PT's works exude joy to not feel he did have much in his soul. Also Borodin, Rimsky Korsakov or Stravinsky.
The author front does struggle a bit on happy endings mostly, but great art is not always a hoot, especially considering what they were taking as inspiration.
I dunno, other than Prokofiev, those guys were all pretty joyless.
