The Westminster Bubble and the BBC

Talking about politicians and opinion polls...

The BBC is the most popular media outlet for MPs, with 65 per cent of politicians revealing that it is their preferred source for news, according to research carried out by Populus.
Surprisingly, the survey finds that 67% of Conservatives named the BBC as one of their preferred news sources (specifically Radio 4, followed by the BBC News website) while only 55% of Labour MPs named the BBC.

To those frustrated at the Conservatives for failing to take part in a sustained charge against BBC bias, this may help provide an answer. Yes, they may resent its bias but, as one of the piece's commentators puts it, "they cannot resist taking a peek at what they are saying" as "MPs are concerned with outlets that affect their reputations"..

...and no media organisation in the country can affect a politician's reputation quite like the BBC.

He also observed that the figures overall provide "evidence of the bubble surrounding Westminster. They reveal that very few MPs cite social media, and none whatsoever cite some of the UK's most popular sites, suggesting what the PR Week report calls "a huge disparity between the reading habits of MPs and the general public".
