ReplyDeleteThe Oxford English Dictionary defines 'swarm' (noun) as 'A very large or dense body or collection; a crowd, throng, multitude ... of persons'. This meaning of the word has been in use since at least 1423.
Interestingly the OED also has 'allusively of persons who leave the original body and go forth to found a new colony or community', used in this sense since 1659.
