They're grrrrreat!

It looks as if BBC people calling other BBC people "great" is spreading.

Following Andrew Marr's repeated praise for "the great Chris Morris", here's the BBC's former Australia correspondent Nick Bryant praising the latest one:
The BBC has a new Australia correspondent and she’s great - Shaimaa Khalil. Tellingly, she arrives to massive bushfires and a coal-brandishing prime minister who “refused to be drawn on whether climate change could have contributed to the fires”.
Tellingly, Nick also has a point to make there, and Shaimaa - bless her! - is already on it:
Australia warns of a "catastrophic" bushfire threat to the areas around Sydney as blazes rage across NSW and Queensland. Meantime the country's conservative gov. refuses to make the link to climate change.

  1. Why does the BBC need an 'Australia correspondent'? (I hate this noun as adjective stuff). Surely the ABC output exactly meets the BBC's needs? The same applies with CBC US content. Just stay at home and if needs be do a UK voiceover, in fact go the whole hog and get Somali TV to do them, for added 'diversity'!

  2. The BBC's way of going about things is weird.

When reporting from India and Africa, they use local Indians and Africans. When reporting from the USA, they use Brits (and almost exclusively white Brits). When reporting from the UK they use a huge numbers of people from recent migrant backgrounds - "visible" ethnic minorities to use the jargon (Polish, Spanish and Italian migrants need not apply).

When reporting from European countries, they are back to the policy of white Brits...

And when reporting from Australia and New Zealand it seems they don't use Australians or New Zealanders.

Shaimaa, if I were you I'd take a leaf out of Nick Bryant's book. Limit yourself to one report about every two months and spend the rest of the time writing a whingey little book that will earn you more than even your BBC salary and expenses combined...

  3. Shaimaaaaaa's new gig has been quite special.

She is shaping up as the new JonDon, if with a stronger work ethic than him or Nick combined and no canoe. Apparently.

If her beat is the entire continent she might need to play down the 'Arrivals' airport shots in Perth, Darwin or Port Moresby.

Or if picking up the Fiat 500 from the short term at HRW on frequent repatriation jaunts for office parties.

    1. Anyone, even the laziest koala, would have a stronger work ethic than JonDon in Australia.

  4. So far, she appears to be on fire.
