Panglossian

Gossiping about Boris and Dave on this morning's Today, BBC political correspondent Ben Wright told John Humphrys (14:53 in) that Boris had "painted, in an interview with Laura [Kuenssberg], this typically Panglossian picture of Britain outside the EU".

Now either Ben doesn't know what 'Panglossian' means...

...or else he's just made a very biased statement about Boris Johnson there.

Hopefully it's the former.

  1. Could it be both? Hmmm...

    1. I've sent him a tweet informing him what 'Panglossian' means, just in case.

  2. LOL - I'm sure he was very happy to receive that! :)

    1. You'd think so but, oddly, he's not replied yet!

    2. I couldn't see it there. I don't use Twitter. Can you delete responses? Do you have a link?

    3. Well, I'm no great expert on Twitter either, but this should be the link to my tweet:

I'm not sure about whether responses can be deleted. On some blogs a deleted comment takes the responses with it. On others it leaves them high and dry. I don't use Twitter enough (except for reading it) to be able to say which way it goes there.

  3. He knows. He even added the modifier "typically" to dismiss it further. It was a value judgment, which is supposed to be verboten. Except when it's acceptable 'analysis' from an expert journalist.

    Definitely one for BBC Complaints.
